The day before
this last Veterans Day, November 10, 2023, I received a call from Eddy
Allen. Eddy had attended Reunions of the 6/27th Artillery as he
served with the CannonKings as XO in 1968-69, partly during the same
time I had served with the 6/27th. Eddy was calling to ask Marion and I to lunch the next day, Veterans Day, and he said he had something for me which he refused to divulge in our phone conversation. I thought it might be some Vietnam photos or copies of some old unit reports. Boy was I surprised! Eddy arrived at our home in Omaha and he carried a paper type shopping bag as he entered our home. From the bag he pulled out one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen - A Quilt of Valor! He said as he presented this Quilt of Valor to me, that "I deserved it for all of the time I had spent on developing and maintaining our website as well working on the nine Reunions we have had with a tenth reunion in the planning stages." I was indeed honored by his gift! The three of us then went to lunch at a favorite restaurant which we were pleasantly surprised to discover our lunch was to be free for Eddy and I, as we were proud Veterans. Eddy returned to Iowa City that same day. THANK YOU, EDDY FOR YOUR KIND GESTURE! I will cherish this Quilt of Valor for my remaining days. |
