George Glover Mays 87, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at
home with his family. George was born in Monticello, FL, in April of
1926. He served in the Marine Corps during WW II. During this time
George was
part of the 6th Marine Division serving in the Pacific Theater
and was present in Landing Day on the island of Okinawa. He later served in the US Army, after graduating from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. There he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Army ROTC. George obtained the rank of Colonel during his Army career. He also served 2 tours in Vietnam. George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mateel Prince Mays, formerly of Greenville, FL, daughter Melissa Trebuchon and her husband Matt of Harmony, FL, formerly of Peachtree City, GA, son Richard Mays of Peachtree City, sisters Christine Millinor of Madison, FL and Louise Searcy of Tallahassee, FL , grandchildren Rachel and Daniel Stone both of Peachtree City , Matthew Trebuchon and two great grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents, Dannitte Hill Mays and Francis Lavonia Garwood Mays of Monticello, FL. The family will receive visitors at Carl J Mowell & Son in Peachtree City on Monday, September 23, 2013 from 5-7:00PM and Beggs Funeral Home in Monticello, FL on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM. There will be memorial service on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Peachtree City, GA at 11:00 AM. There will be an additional memorial service following the visitation on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the graveside, Evergreen Cemetery, Greenville, FL. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Fayette County, GA Humane Society (www.fayettehumane.org) or the Georgia Chapter Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/georgia).
