A Special Photo For Karl Sherck |

I was
transferred from Charlie Battery located at Phouc Vinh to Alpha Battery
at Quan Loi on July 23, 1967. I was told I was a replacement for
an Alpha Battery soldier recently killed. (See note below).
Within a few days after I arrived in Quan Loi a fellow soldier gave me this photo. As you can tell from the photo's condition it has seen some "traveling time". I do not recall the soldier's name, but I remember he told me it was a photo of a damaged APC on guard duty the night of the overrun. He said a VC/NVA soldier had dropped a grenade in the top of the APC during the recent overrun and when it went off it killed the men inside of it and blew the back door open. Not sure exactly why, but I carried this photo in my wallet for 30 years. It just meant something to me. I am still not sure what. It just had a special impact. . . Maybe because I took it as a warning of how easy it could be for any soldier, including myself, to be killed in Quan Loi. Karl Sherck |
Note: This soldier may have been Michael Stanley Berek of Alpha Battery who was killed on July 14, 1967 at Quan Loi. |
