First Camp to Phouc Vinh - 1966 |
After sixteen days in
the Staging Area
near Saigon University the 6/27th Artillery becomes a part of the
23rd
Artillery Group and receives tactical assignments. *(See Note
Below). On November 10, 1965 Alpha & Service Batteries are first to move to a location east of Bien Hoa in an area called the "Widows Village". Soon it was necessary to find a new location for the Batteries. Whenever Alpha Battery had fire missions to the north they disrupted air traffic at Bien Hoa AFB. In a short time a new location was found for both batteries in an area adjacent to the base camp of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Around November 20, 1965, Headquarters, Charlie and Bravo Batteries moved in an equipment convoy, escorted by the 1st Squadron, 4th US Cavalry and elements of the 1st Engineer Battalion, to Phouc Vinh. The troops, however, boarded C-130's and flew there while the equipment moved in convoy. Alpha remained near Bien Hoa to fire in support of the 173rd Airborne while Service Battery moved to a location near Long Binh Post. The following are photos of our camp at Phouc Vinh in 1965 and 1966. |
