Coming into San Francisco to be let out of the Army I saw the Bay Bridge again. Once we got to the base in San Francisco they took us in to get us new uniforms and take all of our remaining gear.
Unbelievably, they actually deducted from each mans pay any missing items. Many had turned stuff in before leaving bases in Vietnam and had no papers to prove it. Many guys were charged several hundred dollars for lost gear. I got lucky because the sergeant that watched me as we produced each item told me to “just throw something in the bin and you’ll be fine.” I lost all my underwear but no money…A good guy!
