In 1964, Mickey Jones became the drummer for songwriter and rocker Johnny Rivers, who also was honored in Reno. Rivers was asked to do a USO tour in Vietnam in 1966 along with Ann-Margret, and he wanted to bring Jones and his bass player. Jones was asked whether he worried about his safety.

"I said it would be quite unique to have this experience. No one over there wants to die, and I don't think they would put me in a position where I might be hurt," he said."
