I recently finished a painting that has been on my mind for may years. I finally got it on paper. I think many a trooper experience night-time incoming mortars as this picture portrays. “Alpha” Battery was set up somewhere in a jungle surrounded rice paddy near Bear Cat (I think) when a VC mortar crew started firing on our battery and the 105 howitzer outfit beside us. We had been chewed out for shooting up the jungle the night before and were told we would be court-martialed if we didn’t produce a body if we shot at anything. Well, no one fired a shot. Fortunately the 105 guys opened up with an M-60 and the mortar crew (which we could see firing) quit shooting and that was that. If you look close you will see the flash of the mortar at the tree line to the right of the center mortar explosion in the picture.  John Anderson
