Adrian Gravelle's Vietnam  1965-66

Part 1 - Building of the Service Battery
6/27th Artillery Compound at Long Binh

After arrival in Vietnam in October 1965, Service Battery and A Battery were originally co-located on the northern perimeter of Bien Hoa Air Base.  Both batteries remained under canvas, and no permanent structures were constructed at Bien Hoa.

Sometime in early 1966, Service Battery moved to the big Army supply and administrative area of Long Binh, on the Saigon-Bien Hoa Highway.   Long Binh contained numerous quartermaster, ordnance, hospital and engineer units.  Service Battery was a short distance from the large Long Binh Ammunition Depot, and was ideally located for one of its key missions: resupply of artillery ammunition to the firing batteries.

My series of slides shows the battery at Bien Hoa Air Base and the construction of the new Service Battery compound at Long Binh.  After the engineers graded the site, all construction was done by Service Battery soldiers. The true heroes of this construction were those Service Battery soldiers skilled in carpentry and other construction skills.
